Market Scorecard — 8 Markets, 6 Criteria

Eight active markets run different security stacks, escrow models, and anti-phishing defenses — and those differences matter once you start weighing trade-offs. Each platform below is scored 1–5 on six criteria: security architecture, escrow model, listing volume, operational history, anti-phishing, and interface quality. Totals are not weighted into a single rank; the right choice depends on which criteria matter most to you.

The Scorecard

Scores run 1 (weakest) to 5 (strongest). Security architecture covers PGP and 2FA enforcement and default encryption. Escrow model reflects buyer fund exposure per the escrow risk model. Listing volume is relative to peer markets as of September 2026. Operational history measures years active without disruption against the median 3-year lifespan of closed platforms. Anti-phishing rates on-site defenses beyond baseline PGP verification. Interface quality covers usability and design polish. A market that scores low on UX but high on security isn't worse — it's a different trade-off.

Reading the Profiles

Black Ops tops the total almost entirely on security and scale — PGP-integrated 2FA, encrypted wallets by default, and the largest active listing count of any platform tracked here. Its lowest score, operational history, reflects launch date alone: launched September 2024, and time is the one criterion that can't be accelerated.

Nexus ties for the top interface score and posts the highest escrow score in the table, thanks to its wallet-less-plus-multisig hybrid. Its weak point is anti-phishing — static addresses with no on-site verification layer make it a heavier-than-average phishing target.

TorZon has the most balanced profile in the scorecard — nothing below a 3, nothing above a 4. Its personal-phrase system and link rotator cover the anti-phishing gap that hurts Nexus and DarkMatter, without the newest-market history penalty that caps Black Ops and Catharsis.

DrugHub posts the highest anti-phishing score — unique per-visitor links close off the static-target attack surface entirely — paired with the highest security score alongside Black Ops for mandatory PGP and 2FA. Its UX score is the trade-off: functional but visibly dated next to Nexus or Black Ops.

DarkMatter earns the only 5 in operational history, a direct result of running since 2022 without a disruptive incident. Its anti-phishing and UX scores sit low because it hasn't added any mechanism beyond baseline PGP and CAPTCHA since launch.

Bazaar scores well on escrow specifically because of its 2-of-3 multisig option for Bitcoin — see the escrow risk model for why that structurally caps exit-scam exposure — but PGP and 2FA remain optional rather than enforced, which caps its security score below the mandatory-PGP markets.

WeTheNorth and Catharsis tie for the lowest total, for different reasons. WeTheNorth's smaller, Canada-only listing volume and absent 2FA hold it down despite a solid five-year operational record. Catharsis launched in 2025 and that shows in the history score, but Direct Pay and a clean interface keep its escrow and UX scores competitive with markets twice its age.
